Lamb's [V 005 / design] called for the first five floors to stretch to the limits of the lot line. Then there would be one setback beginning at the sixth floor. Above the 30th floor would be another setback. From here the tower rose virtually uninterrupted to the 79th floor. Therefore, from the 30th floor up, the building occupies only one-quarter of its lot. By avoiding the "wedding cake" profile of buildings with several [G 13 / setbacks], Lamb designed a building the majority of whose floors could be built one right after the other in assembly-line style, with no variation in construction or materials. Also, the tower floors would each have more windows and minimal interior darkness. There would be fewer square feet of rentable space, but less space to build and maintain.
